Sunday Special CELEBRATES!
Sunday 3rd July 2011
On the first Sunday of July we celebrated
ten years of Sunday Special
(a monthly lunch held for parishioners who may be on their own).
As the Parish Centre had not been built,
our first ever Sunday Special
was held in St Joseph’s Hall on Sunday 1st July 2001
and not a month has been missed since then.
We moved across to the much bigger and
better kitchen and surroundings of
the Parish Centre as soon as the doors opened in 2003.
Our celebrations started with champagne
and, at the end of a lovely roast lunch,
we cut the ‘anniversary’ cake and toasted many years of Sunday Special - past
and future.

Congratulations to all involved
Sunday Special has become very much part of the parish calendar for many
parishioners

The KSC annual pilgrimage to Aylesford Priory
Sunday 12th June 2011
The KSC annual pilgrimage to Aylesford Priory took place on Sunday 12th June.
Despite a horrible rainy day,
the spirits of the Knights and their wives were not dampened - as the picture
shows.

It was a special day out nonetheless,
attended by knights and parishioners from all the Hemel Parishes with 29 in
total on the coach.
The Mass, celebrating Pentecost, was
presided over by Archbishop Peter Smith of the Southwark Diocese.
Unfortunately, the rosary procession in the afternoon was cancelled as the rain
became increasingly heavy.
However, inspired by the Archbishop and led by Sister Bertranda, we recited the
rosary together
as we wended our way back around the M25 to Hemel, cold, tired but uplifted!
The shrine at Aylesford is a very special
place of pilgrimage and we look forward to next year
with perhaps a few more families joining us to enjoy its beauty and spiritual
charm.

Święconka
"the blessing of the Easter baskets”
Holy Saturday, 23rd April 2011 at 1:00pm
Since there are
number of Polish families in our community,
Father John has introduced to the parish life one of the most enduring and
beloved Polish Easter traditions
on Holy Saturday: Święconka (Pronounced
shvyehn-SOHN-kah), meaning "the blessing of the
Easter baskets”.
A typical "Święconka"
basket of Polish Holy Saturday tradition, containing a sampling of Easter foods,
is brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally
lined with a white linen or
lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood (bukszpan), the typical Easter
evergreen.
While in some older or rural communities, the priest visits the home to bless
the foods, the vast majority of Poles
visit the church on Holy Saturday, praying at the Tomb of the Lord (the
fourteenth and final Station of the Cross).
The Blessing of the Food is, however, a festive occasion. The three-part
blessing prayers specifically address
the various contents of the baskets, with special prayers for the meats, eggs,
cakes and breads.
The priest then sprinkles the individual baskets with holy water.
The typical basket
would include seven major types of food:
bread, eggs (hand-painted by children), cheese, meat, horse-raddish, cake and
salt.
Each type symbolizing different elements of life,
e.g. Bread as a main daily food but also a symbol of Christ’s Body,
Egg – symbol of life and Christ’s victory over death or
Salt – a symbol of purification and truth.
Photographs of some typical baskets can be seen
KSC Quiz Night
On Saturday 16th April 2011
The Knights of St Columba held a
very successful, well attended Quiz Night
in the Parish Centre on Saturday 16th April.
A sum in excess of £500.00 was raised in aid of Parish and KSC (Local Charities) Funds.
A big thank you to all who participated and contributed on the night.
We look forward to the next Quiz Night in the Autumn.
Bible Study with Paula Jordao
On Mondays 28th
March, 4th and 11th April 2011
For many years now we have had a regular
weekly Parish Bible Study/Reflection group
which meets at St Mary’s Dominican Convent on Mondays at 1.30 pm.
The reflection is usually led by different members of the 12-16 enthusiastic,
regular participants.
This Lent the Diocesan Agency for
Evangelisation offered our Parish the chance of having a
guest speaker for three of these sessions to which other parishes in the
Deanery were invited.
Paula Jordao, who is a member of the Verbum Dei Community, an Institute of
Consecrated Life
founded in 1963 in Mallorca (Spain) by Fr Jamie Bonnet and approved by Pope Paul
II, was the speaker.
Between 27 and 31 people attended the sessions.
Paula reflected with us on the Gospel readings for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, and her themes were:
3rd Sunday
‘The Blindside’
God does not see as people see….. the Lord looks at the heart not appearances
4th Sunday
‘Do you believe this?’
Lord if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Passion Sunday
‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’,
O lord, do not leave me alone. My strength, make haste to help me.
SONGS 'SACRED & PROFANE'
Saturday 9th April 2011
Songs Sacred and Profane was a great success on Saturday 9th April.
The Choir and Musicians gave a spirited performance of some of their favourite
hymns,
sacred songs and numbers that had a spiritual or religious feel to them.
The audience was invited to join in most of the songs and sang along with
gusto.
Our encore was 'Lord, you have come to the Lakeside' which is the theme song of the choir.
Wine and nibbles were served afterwards.
The evening raised £450 for the Presbytery Building Fund.
Many thanks to Choir Members who donated the wine and nibbles and a special thanks to Ann Lynn for her wonderful cake.
RCIA
Group attend Special Service at Westminster Cathedral
Sunday 13th March
The RCIA group from SSM&J and St. Mark's travelled up to Westminster Cathedral on Sunday 13th March for the Rite of Election.
This is when all those
preparing to be baptised or received into the Church at the Easter sacraments
go for a service of welcome and commitment and are greeted personally by the
archbishop and bishops.
There are 2 catechumens (unbaptised)
and 3 candidates in total.
We had a great time and it was lovely to join with so many others on this last
stage of their faith journeys.
Thanks to everyone who supported the tasting - we raised £663 for the parish building fund.

Visit of Archbishop Vincent Nichols
Sunday, 13th February 2011
A church packed with people
from all three parishes (plus some from further afield)
welcomed Archbishop Vincent Nichols on Sunday 13th February.
Those unable to fit into St Mary and St Joseph Church gathered in the Parish
Centre, where there was a live link to the church.
Mass was celebrated by the
Archbishop with Fr John and Fr Voytek concelebrating and Deacon Simon Wright
assisting.
The orchestra and choir filled the church with music. The congregation responded
splendidly to the request to sing up
and even rose to the challenge of singing an African chant taught them that
morning!
The Archbishop, standing at
the front (rather than in the pulpit),
spoke warmly and clearly, skilfully drawing out the most relevant points in the
readings.
It was a joy to see the
offertory procession of some forty plus 'Little Churchers'
and First Holy Communicants being received by the Archbishop.
The children who will be making their first Holy Communion were presented with
their St Matthew Gospel.
Somehow the children were found a space to sit around the altar!
Members of the RCIA group, with their sponsors, were then asked to come forward
to receive a blessing.
The Archbishop reminded them that they will meet him in Westminster Cathedral
for their Rite of Election on 13th March.
Parishioners were greeted by
the Archbishop as they made their way out of church
and then many gathered in the Parish Centre for refreshments provided by the CWL.
Here the Archbishop mingled with parishioners, many of whom had the chance for
at least a short chat.
All agreed that the visit had
been an uplifting experience in so many ways –
the coming together of so many parishioners,
the joyful celebration of the Mass
and, of course, the welcome visit by Archbishop Vincent Nichols.

Malayalam Christmas & New Year Celebrations
On 6th January most of the
seventy five Malayalam families who live in Hemel Hempstead gathered together to
celebrate Christmas.
Families of other faiths joined the Catholic families in Leverstock Green
Village Hall.
The festivities were very colourful with cinematic and traditional dances and
curries.
At other times of the year
the group gathers to celebrate the Hindu festival of Onam and the Muslim
festival of Eid.
They are now contemplating gathering for a combined Easter-Vishu dinner!
The Children's Christmas Mass took place at 6pm on Christmas Eve. It is always a very special Mass and all children in the Parish (and not just those who regularly attend 'Little Church') are invited to take part (via the November newsletter). Those wanting to be involved had two short rehearsals beforehand and those with speaking parts took their readings home so that everyone was well prepared on the night.
There were about 25 children involved and those who didn't arrive in their costumes got dressed at the front of the Church (with a team of about 10 parents helping) before Mass started.
Pews at the front of the Church were reserved and also a pew about a third way down - it was from this pew that Mary and Joseph made their long journey to Bethlehem (the altar) as did the shepherds, angels and the Three Kings.
As expected, the Church was buzzing with excitement (children and parents alike!). Everyone arrived early to try and get a seat and the Church was full by 5.30pm - those who didn't get a seat went to the Parish Centre and participated in the Mass via video-link. Most of the children arrived nearly an hour before Mass started. However, despite being in Church for well over two hours, they all behaved extremely well.
After Father John had said his opening prayer, he told the congregation that the children wanted to tell the Story of Christmas. There were seven narrators and they and all those with speaking parts (including the inn-keeper and angels) spoke beautifully. Readings were interspersed with carols and some songs by the children. All went smoothly (apart from the shepherds arriving a little too early to Bethlehem - but no-one seemed to notice!).
At the end the children got a clap and a well-earned sweet!

Carols by Candlelight
Monday, 20th December 2010
Our Carols by
Candlelight 2010 was a great success, with many people from across our 3
parishes
commenting on the beauty, serenity and tranquillity of the evening, the quality
of the music and singing, and also the wonderful spirit that pervaded
throughout.
Our many thanks
go to all those involved in the organisation, planning and structure,
in particular to the choir and orchestra, and to also to their leaders,
Bernadette Lynn and Jane and Tom Gonzalez.
COFFEE WITH
THE SCOUTS!
Sunday, 12th December 2010
4th Boxmoor Scouts organised coffee, bacon butties and mince pies
in the Parish Centre after the 9am Mass.
All parishioners were welcome to join them.
Advent Reflection
Thursday, 9th December 2010
On Thursday 9th December we were treated to a very stimulating talk called, 'What did Isaiah say about Jesus?' by Fr. Krys Sonek OP.
Fr. Krys took us back to the prophecies of the prophet (from the 7th century BC) and related those to the way the early Christians looked at and interpreted the person of Jesus.
We finished with a reflection on the coming of the light of Christ into our world.
We're very grateful to the sisters for hosting our Advent talks.
Seventeen of the Sunday Special guests came for Christmas lunch preceded by very welcome mulled wine.
This was the
culmination of another year of monthly lunches shared by a friendly,
appreciative group
who enjoy each other's company as well as the excellent meal provided by a small
group of parishioners.
As usual after the ‘wine and dine’ everyone attempted to solve the quiz provided by Paul – with generally successful answers!

Boxmoor Christmas Craft Fayre
Sunday,
28th November 2010
St Mary
and St Joseph Parish Centre
We were delighted to welcome so many people out of the cold and into the warmth of our buzzing craft fayre.
This year, in addition
to the stalls with handcrafted and designer products, we had a ‘Kids’ Zone’ –
which included face painting and a workshop (with expert tuition on hand).
The children (+ their parents!) had great fun making different items such as
Artist Trading Cards, Christmas and birthday cards and bracelets made from
ribbon and wooden beads.
For those who needed a
break from shopping there was the opportunity to have a relaxing cup of coffee
or tea and to indulge themselves in fabulous homemade cakes
(catering and hosting organised by cheerful members of the Catholic Women’s
League).
This was a very happy community event as well as a fundraiser for the New Presbytery Fund.

Parish
Councils Forum

2010

A workshop morning was held for parish councillors to review our aims, progress, visions and hopes for the future and to decide how best we go forward as parish councils. Interested parishioners were also invited to attend and we were pleased to have representatives from all four Hemel parishes. This made for valuable comparisons and sharing of ideas.
After an introduction by Fr John on the purpose and benefits of parish councils we divided into three groups for the workshops.
In our first workshop we considered questions such as:
What should be a parish council’s range of involvement in parish life and activity?
What authority / recognition should it have?
How should it be structured to work effectively?
What should be the
relationship between the parish council and the finance committee?
(amongst several others)
In our second workshop further questions were considered such as:
How should parishioners be encouraged to become councillors and should they be selected/invited/elected?
How should the council listen to and reflect the needs/ views of parishioners – and also keep them informed?
Should meetings be open to all parishioners? If so, on what basis?
How can a parish
council encourage greater official recognition from the diocese/deanery?
(again amongst several other questions)
We finished with a plenary session. All agreed that it had been an extremely useful and constructive morning.
A powerful meeting listening to Mary Hla of Burma Action UK.
Mary gave a PowerPoint presentation showing many aspects of life under the military regime in Burma.
She talked movingly about her first hand knowledge of the situation and finished with the plea of Aung San Suu Kyi
"Please use your liberty to promote ours".
Hopefully many of us will do just this.
It was good to see some new faces at the meeting. Our thanks to the Dominican Sisters for their hospitality.
Our Annual Open Air Mass
September 2010
It was a great day and, despite the not very good weather, lots of people came. It was also a send off for our students – though many had already started their terms.
We enjoyed an excellent BBQ afterwards, facilitated by the Scouts, and the CWL did teas and coffees as usual - a lovely community end to the morning.
